Obituary for Margaret Johnson
Margaret (Marge) Keepin Johnson, age 95, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2017, in Littleton, Colorado. A long time resident of Putnam County, Georgia, she was born on April 7, 1921, in Vittoria, Ontario, Canada, to Thomas Howard and Eva Belle Dunkin Keepin. After moving with her family as a child to Detroit, Michigan, Mrs. Johnson graduated from Lake Orion High School and from the Grace Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She enlisted in the United States Army and became a U. S. citizen during her service as an Army Nurse during WWII in both Iran and Germany. In Germany, after WWII, First Lieutenant Keepin met Captain Cecil Johnson, formally a rifle company commander in the 84th Division, whom she married on April 11, 1946, in Oglethorpe, Georgia. Mrs. Johnson’s life continued as she accompanied her husband in his career in the University of Georgia’s Extension Service. For 20 years, she was known as Mrs. J to the staff and many camp counselors at Rock Eagle 4-H Center near Eatonton as Mr. Johnson served as Director. Mrs. J was quite honored to receive the singular honor of being designated an Honorary Counselor by the Rock Eagle Counselor’s Association. Also while in Eatonton, Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church, Eatonton Garden Club, Uncle Remus Woman’s Club, and the Union Chapel Homemaker’s Club and enjoyed her time tutoring elementary-age children in reading at the local elementary school. Mrs. Johnson is preceded in death by her husband, Cecil E. Johnson. She is survived by her sons, Colonel James M. Johnson, U.S. Army Retired, and wife Lois, Major General William H. Johnson, U.S. Army Retired, and wife Melanie, Colonel Thomas C. Johnson, U.S. Army Retired, and wife Cindy. Grandchildren, Kristin and husband Corbett Foster, Dana and husband Army Lieutenant Colonel David Key, Adam Johnson, Lucas and wife Candice Johnson, Tyler Johnson, and Nicole Johnson. Great- grandchildren, Caden and Jackson Foster, Jessa and Spencer Key, Campbell Johnson, and Brennan Johnson. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Johnson will be held at 1:00 PM, on Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Union Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment, with full Military Honors, to follow the service at Union Chapel UMC Cemetery. Reception and fellowship to follow at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center Dining Hall.
