Obituary for Virginia Swymer
Virginia S. Swymer, 81, of Conyers, GA, passed away Monday, January the 2nd, at the Green Acres Nursing Home in Milledgeville, following a brief illness. She was born the only child of Dewitt and Mabel Smith on January 8, 1930 in Kingman, KS. Virginia graduated high school from Mt. Carmel Academy in Wichita, KS and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from Wesleyan Conservatory in Macon, GA. In 1951, she took a teaching position at the Grammar School in Eatonton, GA, where she met and married her late husband, Archie Swymer. For 25 years she taught music in the Putnam County school system and directed the choral program. In 1977, she retired from teaching and moved with her husband to DeKalb County where they operated a sporting goods business. Following her husband’s death in 1988, she retired from the business and bought a home in Conyers where she enjoyed entertaining family and friends as well as traveling. Virginia is survived by her three sons, Dee and Tod Swymer of Eatonton, and Tim Swymer of Stockbridge; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and a close family friend, Rodrigo Aguirre of Medellin, Colombia. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to the Eatonton – Putnam Arts Foundation or the Eatonton First United Methodist Church. A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Vining Ivy Hill Chapel. The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Eatonton followed by interment at Pine Grove Cemetery. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel is in charge of the arrangements
