Thomas Edwin Usry, Sr. was born in Etowah, TN to Clevie and Henry Grady Usry in 1932. His family, which included two other brothers and a sister, all moved to Atlanta during high school where Tom would play football before meeting and marrying Joyce Elaine Compton in 1950.
In the first decade of marriage Tom worked while attending college and was in the Army for about two years. Most of his time in the Army was spent in Germany. Tom and Joyce raised two children, Tom Jr and Jennifer, in the Atlanta area. Many of the family vacations were going camping in the North Georgia mountains.
For a career, he was an accountant and worked for a variety of companies, ultimately retiring from the State of Georgia when he turned 66. He and Joyce soon thereafter fulfilled a lifelong dream of his which was to buy a farm and raise cattle. They enjoyed raising the cattle and fixing up the small house on the property. After a few years on the farm they moved to Lavonia to live near Joyce’s sisters.
In 2008 their first and only grandchild, Addie Grace, was born. Tom, Sr. was ecstatic. He and Joyce soon moved to Greensboro, GA to live closer to Tom, Jr., Susan, and Addie Grace.
He has enjoyed tea parties, birthday parties, and spending lots of time with Addie Grace.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter, Tom , Susan, and Addie Grace Usry; and his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Thomas Weber. He is also survived by his niece, Ann Jenkins Simmons.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and two infant children, Matthew and Susan. His loyalty, wisdom, and sense of humor will be greatly missed.
