Obituary for Sammy Wooten
Sammy Wooten passed away peacefully on December 7th at the age of 71 surrounded by his greatest loves. Sammy was born March 7, 1950 to Marvin R Wooten & Azilee Wooten in Eatonton, Georgia. The 12th of 13 children and the son of the local barber, Sammy perfected the art of storytelling, having a fondness for the tallest of tales. For over 75 years, Wooten’s Barber Shop has served middle Georgia as a repository of lies, laughs and a haircut every now and then. A lifelong Mason, Sammy embodied the ideal of service to his community, his family and to his God.
Sammy coached little league baseball, kept stats for Gatewood Football, issued 1000’s of first haircuts and painted more Dairy Festival signs than anyone can begin to count. His love for Putnam county and its residents made its way into most every conversation he had, especially if he happened upon someone who wasn’t from there. He humorously shared Eatonton news by way of his hilarious cartoons often published in the paper.
Sammy’s love for his God was also something he shared with anyone and everyone that entered his shop or crossed his path. As a long time member of Crossroads Baptist Church, Sammy shared his love for Christ with his words but more so in the way he treated everyone around him. He loved hunting & fishing, mostly because of his appreciation for God’s creation.
Sammy’s joy in his life was his family. Greatest among them was his wife of 37 years, Patty. The two dated in high school then reunited and wed in 1984. They shared a beautiful life together with five children and seven grandchildren. Sammy is survived by his wife Patty, his children Teresa, Charlie, Jimmy, Brian, and Cindy, his grandchildren Sam, Maggie, Olivia, Claire, Jack, Bo, and Haley as well as his sisters Jimmie, Lillian and Gloria. He was preceded in death by his parents and Marvin and Azilee and his brothers and sisters James, Homer, Donald, Joann, Dot, Carlin and Maudell.
