Obituary for Jeff Dwyer Marshall
Jeff Dwyer Marshall, 66, of Eatonton, lost his battle with cancer on Monday, March 25, 2013. As was his wish, he died at home with family by his side. He was born on January 16, 1947, in Milledgeville, GA, to the late James Penick and Doris Jenkins Marshall. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Kenneth Marshall. Jeff became an Eagle Scout in 1963 and graduated from Putnam County High School in 1965. He served in the United States Army from 1968-1971 during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Korea and Germany. He returned to Eatonton after his military service where, while continuing his education, he and his brother, Jimmy, ran Middle Georgia Builders. He also worked with his father as part of J. P. Marshall & Associates to build the nursing home in Eatonton. He graduated from Georgia College in 1979 with a BS degree in Mathematics. Jeff started working at Lockheed Martin\'s Marietta plant as a software programmer in 1979 and, over the course of the next twenty years, helped to design, program, test, implement, and maintain a state of the art attendance and labor recording system that was used by tens of thousands of employees who were building C5s, C130s, and F22s. He was an Information Systems Engineer and Database Administrator when he retired in 2002. Working at Lockheed Martin was more than just a job for Jeff, the people that Jeff worked with were like family and remain so to this day. While working at Lockheed Martin, Jeff met Mary Floda. They were married in 1991 and resided in Dallas, GA, until Jeff decided to return to Eatonton to be closer to family and friends. He was in the process of building their retirement house when he became ill. Jeff was a VFR pilot having been taught how to fly by his father, who was a pilot during World War II. Jeff learned to snow ski while he was stationed in Germany and loved skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and in North Carolina. Jeff loved to go float fishing for catfish on Lake Sinclair and deep sea fishing near Shellman Bluff. He was an avid hunter of deer and turkey and especially loved to shoot doves. But most of all Jeff loved being with his children, his grandchildren, his family, and his friends. He spent his last days enjoying reminiscing with everyone about the adventures of his youth. He loved being back home in Eatonton. Survivors include his wife, Mary Floda Marshall; daughter Kimberly D. Meeks and husband Toby of Gray, GA; sons Kevin D. Marshall and wife Jennifer of Athens, GA, and Keith D. Marshall and wife Shelly of Macon, GA; brother James P. Marshall Jr. and wife Nancy of Eatonton, GA; sister-in-law Sandra Strickland Marshall of Shellman Bluff; grandchildren Marisa Winget, Bailey Meeks, and Lily Marshall; niece Lauren Marshall; nephews Blake Marshall and Matthew Marshall; and a host of cousins. A memorial service will be held at Harmony Baptist Church, 120 Harmony Church Road, in Putnam County northeast of Eatonton, GA, on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the ALS Association Development Department, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301. Vining Ivy Hill Chapel (www.viningivyhill.com) is in charge of the arrangements.
