Hubert Eugene (Gene) Owen, 74, of Eatonton, GA passed away August 5, 2023 after a short but brutal fight with cancer.
Gene was born in Watertown to Hubert & Margaret Owen. He was an only child, raised in Tennessee by his parents and beloved grandmother Carrie Bell. His playground was his dad’s service station where he tore down his first engine at age 6. Gene is most recently known for his heavy equipment machine shop in Eatonton.
Gene paved portions of I75 as it was being created, repaved streets in Atlanta, and paved many Waffle House parking lots throughout the southeast. He raced mud buggies, drove dune buggies, buses, jet boats and anything with an engine. He rode horses and flew planes.
Gene did about a tenth of what he wanted to do and always had a dozen projects in progress. His greatest enjoyment was the friendships made while working and playing. We will all miss Gene but no one will miss him more than his best friend Buddy.
Gene is survived by his wife Tina; his son Gene and grandchildren Shelbie and Hubert; and his daughter Shanna, who carries on his legacy at the machine shop.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of A. H. Stephens State Park to honor Gene. They are not set up to receive direct electronic donations so please contact President Kathy White at 706-614-8348
