Obituary for Helen Harrell
Helen Harrell, age 92 of Eatonton, was surrounded by her family when she went to be with the Lord on May 3, 2013. She was born in Eatonton to the late Dollie Key and Reuben D. Lawrence on November 12, 1920. She is survived by her son Johnny M. Harrell & wife Brenda, Daughter Sue Harrell Smith & husband Mike, Grandchildren Julie Harrell Usry & husband Steven, Jennifer Harrell Morris & husband Bruce, Amy & Scott Smith, Great-Grandchildren Abbey, Andrew & Alex Usry and Brenlyn, Claire & Jackson Morris. Helen attended Putnam County Schools and graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville with a degree in Home Economics. In 1942 while teaching school she heard a speech by Franklin Delano Roosevelt that inspired her to join the WAVES, the female branch of the United States Navy. After serving three years in the meteorology department she married John Melvin Harrell on March 21, 1947. She taught school in Godfrey and was later hired as director for Putnam County DFACS, retiring after 30 years in 1978. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, serving as a President of the United Methodist Women many times, she was active in the Service League! She was a substitute teacher for many years, she liked to paint, sew, read, cook as well as play bridge and do cross word puzzles. She was a Pink Lady at Putnam General Hospital and also worked at Miss BessieÂ’s Flower Shop arranging flowers. She was in charge of the polling events for Putnam County elections for many years. She was a loving and generous lady and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Eatonton. Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5th at First United Methodist Church of Eatonton (Historical Sanctuary) at 2 PM. Service will follow at 3 PM, burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery.
