Gloria Brand Hill passed on November 29, 2014 at her home on Lake Oconee. She was born January 5, 1935 in Montezuma, Georgia to the late Sara Forehand and the late Walter Brand. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Mary Howell (Edgar Howell) and Joyce Maffett.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel from 5 to 7 PM. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church in Eatonton Great Hall on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at 1 PM, burial will follow at the Georgia War Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville at 2:30 PM. Pallbearers will be Tom Gunthar, John Hinds, Jack Maffett, Richard Moore, Mile Rountree and Clarence Sutton, honorary pallbearer is James Pate.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 56 years Jay Hill. They started first grade together in 1941 and finally married in 1958. Other survivors include son Robert J. Hill, daughter Sally Hill Rockey, grandchildren Thomas Jay Hill & wife Kara, great granddaughter Charlotte Joanne Hill, Emily Francis Hill, Samantha Tatum Rocky, Shane Thomas Rockey and brother in law Jack H. Maffett of Montezuma, Ga. and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
After graduation from Montezuma High, she earned a BS degree in elementary education in 1957 from Georgia Teachers College which is now Georgia Southern. Gloria taught school in New Jersey, New Orleans, Houston, TX and Gwinnett County for a total of 14 years before retiring from teaching.
She studied hard and received her real estate license; however, she retired again before ever making a sale.
Gloria was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eatonton for 24 years, a member of United Methodist Women Day Circle, Harmony Community Association, Plantation Ladies Club and the Town and Country Garden Club of Eatonton. She loved animals. While living in Stone Mountain her family pets included Sweetpea the goat, 2 miniature dachshunds, a squirrel many rabbits and some chickens.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Caring Voice at caringvoice.org and/or the Building Fund of First United Methodist Church of Eatonton, at 103 West Magnolia Street, Eatonton, Ga. 31024.
