Obituary for Frank Thompson Jr

On June 29, 2026, Frank Thompson passed away in the home where he and his beloved wife of almost

44 years, Laura, built a life based on their shared values of faith, integrity, commitment to community,

and love of family and friends.

Frank was born on the Fourth of July in 1947 and was the eldest son of Otis and Myrtle Smith

Thompson. Raised in Eatonton and Athens, he graduated from Athens High School in 1965 and The

University of Georgia in 1975, majoring in Business Management. He honorably served his country in

the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971. He was awarded numerous commendations, including the Bronze

Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

Hard work and service to the community were defining characteristics of his life. His professional life

included 35 years at Horton Homes, Inc., where he worked in various departments over the years,

ultimately being named Vice President of Production. Frank was an active member of First Baptist

Church of Eatonton, where he served as a deacon and on various committees. He taught rowdy boys

in Sunday School, planting seeds in young souls that would grow over time. In honor of his service, he

was recognized on Founders’ Day 2023. He was a member of the first Leadership Putnam class, a

former member of Eatonton Kiwanis Club, a volunteer coach and board member for Putnam County

Recreation Department, and a supporter of Gatewood Schools in more ways than could possibly be

recounted.

Frank’s greatest treasure in life was his family. As a devoted husband and father, he was fiercely

protective, nurturing and loving. He is survived by his wife, Laura, and their children, Jake Thompson

(Pete Settelmayer), Katie Hanks (Edwin), and Ben Thompson (Melanie). Nothing compared to the joy

of being “Buck” to his grandchildren - Amelia, Caroline, and Addie Hanks and Lulu and Walt Thompson.

Frank is also survived by his sister Kaye Bush (Tommy), brother Jerry Thompson, and several nieces

and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marleen and Faye.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Eatonton at 3:00pm on Thursday, July 2,

2026, with visitation to follow the service in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to: First Baptist Church of Eatonton

Extra Special People in Watkinsville (espyouandme.org).
