Obituary for Ernest Martinez
Ernest (Ernie) Juan Martinez Jr. 87, of Conyers passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at his residence following an extended illness. Visitation will be on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel at 1 PM, the service will follow at 2 PM at Vining Ivy Hill Chapel. Interment will be at Eatonton Memorial Park following the service. Mr. Martinez was born on December 25, 1924 in Caguas, Puerto Rico, the son of the late Dr. Ernesto J. Martinez Sr. of Patellas, Puerto Rico and Mrs. Estelle Martinez R.N. of Conyers, Georgia. Mr. Martinez graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia and served in the 96th Infantry Division of the United States Army. He served as a medic during World War II in Okinawa, Ryukyu, Japan. He was the proud receiver of medals and awards including the Good Conduct, Purple Heart and Philippines Liberation, Asiatic-Pacific, Combat Medic Badge, Presidential Citation Badge. He was a member of Conyers First United Methodist Church, American Legion, VFW and Disabled Veterans. Survivors include his wife Patricia (Pat Massey) Martinez, Daughters Felicia Vann (Bruce) of Villa Rica, Sharon A. Smith (Alan) of Monticello, 6 Grandchildren, 6 Great-Grandchildren and host of cousins. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Barbara Reese and Betty Gentry of Eatonton, Georgia and Peggy Kirk of Sandersville, Georgia.
