Dorothy “Dottie” McClain 83, of Eatonton passed away at her residence on July 4, 2025 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on November 2, 1941 to the late Richard and Elizabeth Sprouse. She was preceded in death by her sister Paula Spradin. Dottie was a teacher for 35 years total, 18 years at Putnam County High School, teaching history and geography. Dottie attended Asbury University, Kentucky, and received her Bachelor’s, Master’s Degrees and Specialist’s Degree in Education from Georgia College and State University.
Dottie taught Sunday School at the First Methodist Church of Eatonton, was a member of the First Methodist Woman, and was a trustee of the Church. Dottie helped create the Plaza Arts Center and was a member of Putnam Alliance Performing Arts (PAPA), and served on the Board of Georgia Profession Standards Commission.
Dottie is survived by her husband Dennis McClain, step-daughters Barb McClain (Lynn), Laurie Hardy (Alan), step-grandchildren Dalton Wright, Logan Wright, Reagan Hardy, Milo Hardy, Ivy Hardy, Sydnee Hardy, and Drake Hardy.
A Memorial service will be held at a later date at the Plaza Arts Center.
Memorial Contributions can be made to PAPA, Asbury University, or First Methodist Church of Eatonton in her memory.
